The entry call for the 8th Kinodot has started!

Dear Filmmakers, The 8th Kinodot Experimental Film Festival has opened the entry call! We are looking forward to receiving your new experimental films (any length, any genre) before 28.02.2020 via FilmFreeway or Festhome! Please, check our Regulations for more details.

Destinations. Special Screening at Pleasure Dome (Toronto)

Dear friends, if you happen to be in Toronto for whatever possible reason), please, come by our screening Destinations on June 15th presented by Alena at Pleasure Dome!

Destinations moving images from the Kinodot Experimental Film Festival, featuring works from Brazil, Thailand, Qatar, Palestine, Lesotho and Finland. While each film is formally distinct, they carry political messages that are part of an urgent conversation. The themes of displacement, exile, and societies-in-transition echoes throughout. This program includes a slow-moving film essay on ecology and indigenous culture, genre-bending film-provocation and homeless home movies.

Look Closely at the Mountains, Ana Vaz, 2018 | Brazil/France
Your Father was Born a 100 years old, and so was the Nakba, Razan AlSalah, 2017 | Palestine
Destination Nowhere, Prapat Jiwarangsan, 2018 | Thailand
Turtles are Always Home, Rawane Nassif, 2016 | Lebanon/Qatar/Canada
Behemoth or the Game of God, Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese, 2015 | Lesotho

And here is the decision of our jury!

The prize for the best experimental film and $1000

Yung Lean, Please Be My Yung Love by Julia Mellen: a modern love story - honest, heartfelt, messy, direct, all told in the language of the youtube era.

Special mention by the jury

Operation Jane Walk by Leonhard Müllner and Robin Klengel: original and bright work with an innovative approach and a good sense of humor. The directors look at the urbanism of New York and its historic, political, economic and social aspects, and at the same time reflect on the representation of the virtual and the violence within it. The film is full of sensational ironic details, it’s well written, funny and political.

Special mention by the jury

Gulyabani by Gürcan Keltek: a dense essay with semantic depth, mythology, a dramatic story, and a delightful presentation - very subtle cinematic matter achieving inner intellectual silence.

Congratulations to the winners!

The Jury 2019: Miquel Martí Freixas, Wouter Jansen and Tamara Larina

Still from Please Come Again by Alisa Yang

Here comes the decision of our Jury!

Our 2018 Jury first special mention goes to Destination Nowhere by Prapat Jiwarangsan (Thailand 2018) for it’s intelligent and aesthetically convincing technical-aesthetic decisions to work with monotonous and repetitive manual work and a rough sound to evoke questions of (in-)visibility and precariousness of a marginalized person in a dominant surrounding.

Our 2018 Jury second special mention goes to Optimism by Deborah Stratman (USA / Canada 2018) for it’s humorous and sensitive research into the landscape and history of a special place linking it to the allegorical and conquering quest for light and sun, gold and wealth - and evoking the film-historic genre of gold digging on many levels as an underlying metaphor.

With great unanimity we would like to give the award for best film at the 2018 Kinodot Film Festival in St. Petersburg to a film which stands out for its brilliant complexity, its multitude of narrative layers, its subjective urgency. We were thrilled and enchanted by the aesthetic and sensitive diversity of styles, how animation builds up from the structures in the photographs. We were equally intrigued by the convincing visceral quality of the soundtrack and especially the voice with it’s different acoustic levels. The grandmother's story is dealt with fragile complexity and we see and hear the work of a filmmaker/artist who manages to densely combine aesthetic and concept. So the 2018 award goes to Where is Eva Hipsey? by Orla McHardy (Ireland 2017)

The Jury: Madeleine Bernstorff, Andrea Slovakova, Yakov Lurie, Marc Pelletier

Congratulations to our prizewinners!!

The competition program of VI Kinodot is announced!

This year our competition program includes a record number of 24 films. But, although the program has grown bigger than ever, it actually consists of only two screenings, and we think it's a good approach to try and avoid unhealthy growth (that many good festivals have been the victims of), and stay compact, hungry and mobile.
Among the selected films you will find new works by our former participants Shambhavi Kaul and Mikhail Basov, as well as films by other well known authors, who we haven't had a chance to show at Kinodot before. Congratulations to our participants! And we thank all filmmakers for sending us films! Selection was quite difficult this year with so many good works submitted.

So, here is the program: http://kinodot.com/eng/kinodot_2018

And here is the list of selected films:

A Plastic Bottle's Stair Dance by Mikhail Basov, Russia

The results of the 3d Kinodot competition

The Audience Award goes to ‘The Milkman’ directed by Joe Bor & Daniel Berg, produced by Howard Cohen, United Kingdom.

The Special Jury Mention goes to ‘Serori' by Pedro Collantes, Netherlands. For creating a crisp and funny story - challenging, but rewarding in its simplicity - which makes the viewer both fascinated and uncomfortable; echoing in the consciousness long after being seen.

The Special Jury Mention goes to ‘Cutaway' by Kazik Radwanski, Canada. For its striking, sensitive and very tactile insight into real life experience; seen from a very different, subjective and simple, point of view.

The Jury Prize goes to ‘Absent Minded’ by Roberto Catani, Italy. For a rich and skillful realisation of a genuine sense of daydreaming, the atmosphere of melancholia, mystery and magic, and for evoking a lovely sense of child-like play.

The winners of the Audience Award and the Jury Prize will get $500 each from our partner Smart Media Systems.
